This small garden sloped towards the house. An existing retaining wall had been built close to the house giving a narrow “passageway” feeling with very limited space for entertaining. Narrow steps divided the two garden areas. A young family meant the clients needed to maximise space without sacrificing their lawn.
A large new level patio was created by cutting away part of the slope and building new brick retaining walls. The walls were designed at perch height to provide additional impromptu seating and to create a raised bed for herbs and other fragrant plants.
Wide shallow steps lead up to the new level lawn. A second set of retaining walls at the top of the garden complete the terracing, maximising the usable space.
