This sloping garden in Crowthorne, Berkshire was wide but not very deep. The owner wanted a crisp, contemporary garden design to create real impact but with a soft planting scheme to include some traditional cottage garden flowers mixed with more contemporary grasses.
The garden design included white rendered walls with smooth sawn sandstone paving and walling, to create different levels within the garden. Raised beds surround the new polished sandstone terrace. A built in seating area surrounds a sunken fire pit providing views of the large rusted iron water feature. The colour change LED lights allow the rendered white feature wall to be transformed at night.
A mass planting of Stipa tenuissima was combined with alliums to weave around clipped box cubes, together with the dark red English rose 'Munstead Wood' with an under planting of pale blue Nepeta racemosa 'Walker's Low'.
This contemporary garden design has two personalities, during the day, it is a modern family garden, with crisp, clean lines. As darkness falls, the fire pit, outdoor speakers and LED lights transform the space into a vibrant and exciting entertaining area.
